WHY DO SOME DJI PHANTOMS FALL FROM THE SKY?
If our opinion and from reading many reports on the subject we believe that over 90% of the time it is Pilot error that could have been prevented.
CAUSES OF YOUR PHANTOM DROPPING OUT OF THE SKY?
BATTERY ERRORS / FAILURES
Not maintaining your battery, flying on partially discharged batteries and batteries not inserted correctly.
ALWAYS USE A FULLY CHARGED BATTERY – Phantom 3’s don’t like partially discharged batteries, especially batteries that have gone into auto discharge.
The manual does state you should also start flying with a fully charged battery but easily overlooked and never used to be a problem with the Phantom 2 but for some reason this is causing Phantom 3’s (and Inspires) to drop from the sky.
DEEP DISCHARGE YOUR BATTERY TO 8% EVERY 20 CYCLES (CHARGES) – This re-calibrates your battery to ensure the readings are correct.
ALWAYS INSERT YOUR BATTERY CORRECTLY – When you insert the battery make sure it is fully in, don’t be too gentle when inserting it, make sure it ‘clicks’ in (try pulling it back out to test it).
DO NOT LEAVE YOUR BATTERY IN THE PHANTOM WHEN NOT IN USE – When you leave the battery in it is putting pressure on the contacts and holding clips reducing their effectiveness over long periods of time.
MAINTAIN YOUR BATTERY – Always store your battery at 30%-50% for long periods of time, DJI recommend 7 days or more, there is a feature in the app to set your battery to discharge at after a certain amount of days that you choose. Store in a dry cool place.
UNINTENTIONAL CSC – This is where the pilot has held the control sticks in the down and together, or the down and apart position (the same position you use to start the motors), if you do this whilst the Phantom is in the air it will shut off the motors causing your Phantom to drop to the ground!

Not calibrating your compass and IMU
See videos in our tutorial section to find out how to do this.
Compass calibration is a much debated subject and DJI and not 100% clear on when you should do a compass calibration, in our opinion you should always calibrate your compass before you fly (if you are going to fly from a boat or of a metal structure, calibrate someone safe beforehand.
Make sure you are away from any metal objects and metal structures, this includes being at least 5 feet away from your controller, your mobile phone, your car keys etc! Many people say you only need to calibrate your compass if you have traveled a few hundred miles since your last calibration, they may be right but it is better to be safe than sorry in our opinion.
IMU Calibration should be carried out when you 1st get your Phantom, after any Firmware updates and if you notice it being unstable in any way when flying.
Tip – Always carry out an IMU calibration when your Phantom is cold as the IMU has to warm up to whatever temperature it was at when you did the calibration before it is ready to fly (you will sometimes see the ‘Aircraft is warming up’ message, this should only take seconds). So leave it outside or under an air conditioner prior to calibrating.
