Other than a compatible mobile phone or tablet (see here) everything you need to get started comes with the Phantom 3 including one battery and two sets of propellers, some retailers offer bundle packages that include an extra battery (recommended) and a DJI hardshell backpack.
Below are accessories you should consider purchasing to get started.
Phantom 3 Batteries
“A watched battery never charges.”
– Phantom Addicts
We recommend you have at least two batteries to enjoy flying your DJI Phantom. Depending on which model charger you have batteries take between 60 minutes (Phantom 3 Pro 100W Charger) and 90 minutes (Standard & Advanced 57W Charger).
IMPORTANT: You should always fly with a FULLY CHARGED battery.
Do not leave your batteries fully charged for long periods of time (we recommend no more than 5 days). The DJI GO App has a feature to set your batteries to auto discharge over a certain time period. (See here).
For more information on batteries and how to maintain them see our tutorial section here)
Phantom Backpacks & Cases
The official DJI hardshell backpack is the most popular, it small, lightweight, stylish and reasonably priced at $xxx. If you are on a budget we would suggest the cheaper ‘knock off’ version of this backpack
Things to consider when purchasing your backpack or case:
The size – Will you be travelling with it and does it fit in overhead luggage compartments on Aircraft
Do you want to your propellers on?
Design – Do you really want a backpack that shouts ‘I have a drone’ or do you want it to look like a more regular backpack
Weather resistant – Not all backpacks with protect your Phantom from the rain
A much debated subject on the Phantom Forums with many pilots advising against using them, the reason being that they can act as ‘sails’ affecting the performance and handling of your Phantom leading to crashes. The jury is still out on this one…..
IMPORTANT: If you use the screw on Propeller Guards be sure to not use the re-use screws that come with them if you decide to take them off, they are longer than the standard screws and can damage your Phantom.
“The sun is shining, the weather is sweet, I want to fly but I can’t see my damn screen .”
– Bob Marley if he flew a Phantom 3
Unless you live where the sun rarely shines (like the UK) or you are happy to always find a tree to stand under for shade you will need a sunshade for your mobile or tablet.
The main difference in sunshades is that some are on more of an angle making the screen less reflective.
In addition to a sunshade you can also purchase anti-glare screen protectors for your device, the vary in quality and effectiveness.
Protection For Your Phantom 3
“Better to be safe than sorry .”
– Phantom Addicts
People will always find ways to improve with any product and DJI Phantoms are no different. With the advancement and availability of 3D printing many products have been developed for the Phantom to protect it, some of the many products:
Shell Strengtheners to prevent cracks in the shell
Gimbal Savers to prevent the gimbal separating in a crash
